I Love Central Park, Winter, NYC


It is a rainy day with light snow today in New York, a nice Spring surprise. Today's sprinkling reminded me of how cold it was this winter, one of the coldest on record, and is the inspiration for today's post - pictures of Central Park following a big snow storm in January, 2011.



Behind the wispy branches are the twin towers of The San Remo, one of the most luxurious apartment buildings in New York City. Imagine the beautiful views those lucky residents must have of the park.

Located at the lower level of the Bethesda Terrace, is the Angel of the Waters. According to the Central Park website, "this neoclassical winged female figure symbolizes and celebrates the purifying of the city’s water supply when the Croton Aqueduct opened in 1842 bringing fresh water to all New Yorkers." On this January day, the snow halted this angel's water purifying powers. Pretty soon things will be back in full swing.

    It's been so long since we've just wandered around the park. I'll have to plan another day in the city soon. Although, as pretty as your pictures are, I'll wait for a nice spring day!

    I spent 3 years living on the Upper West Side and the photos brought back glorious memories - I walked the park in all seasons. I am setting my new play in Central Park!

    I lived for two or three months in New York City in the late eighties and never made it to Central Park, I wish now I would have!

    Beautiful photos. Of my trips to NYC years ago, Central Park was one of my fondest memories. I love the Angels of the Waters fountain. So classic and you see it in almost every NYC movie shot in Central Park.

    Such gorgeous pictures. I love exploring city parks, like Central Park and Golden Gate they're the special retreats for city dwellers.

    I miss not being able to walk around in the snowy landscape it adds a magical element to everything, but your pictures did much to ease that feeling. They're beautiful!

    It's been 6 years since I walked Central Park--which then had Cristo's "The Gates" installation. It was clear and cold, the paths lined with brilliant orange banners and people from allover the world strolling in awe.

    Central Park is indeed a special place. Terrific photos.
