As an avid follower of the farmer's market, I have come to develop favorite sources for certain ingredients over time. For pork I like to buy from Flying Pigs, for apples I prefer Red Jacket Orchards, and even for something as common as garlic, I go out of my way to purchase from the best source.
Each week I stop by Keith's farm stand at the Union Square Greenmarket to pick up a couple bulbs of their Rocambole garlic. Compared to the common garlic varieties, the heirloom Rocambole breed is more potent, hot, spicy, and features a thinner skin, making it easier to peel. Keith's garlic is so prized that it has received accolades from Zagat's, which rates the garlic with a whopping 28 points out of a potential of 30, and calls it one of the greatest things at the market. Although, Rocambole garlic is more expensive at $1.50 for a jumbo sized bulb, customers alike agree that it is a fair price given the quality.
Keith's Farm based in Orange County, NY, is one of the few certified organic farms in region to sell at the Union Square Greenmarket. Keith's farmstand offer fresh produce twice weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
As avid garlic consumer to see this picture is like poetry :)
