Up, Up and Away to San Francisco
This year has been the first of many for our sweet little boy, but traveling has been by far the most exciting of these novel experiences for our family. Our first trip was to San Francisco to introduce Alex to friends and family. I've heard horror stories of babies crying for hours on end on planes so I was expecting the flight to be tearful and exhaustive, and possibly ending with my head stuffed between my knees from the shame of bringing chaos into an already uncomfortable situation.
Why San Francisco is So Foggy and a Look into the Giants Baseball Stadium
Autumn is probably the warmest season of the year for San Francisco. It's when that thick gray blanket of fog that stubbornly hovers over the city relents and rolls back to allow the sun to take its turn to dominate the skies for a few precious months.
Barbacco Restaurant San Francisco
Meeting new friends and experiencing exceptionally good food are among my favorite memories. Wherever I am, each fills my heart with tremendous joy. On a recent trip to San Francisco I had the great pleasure meeting LouAnn of Oyster Culture, who writes a fascinating blog focused on the integration of food history and culture, where she researches in-depth the root and evolution of certain foods. How deep? If you want to get an idea read her post on Chorizo You Strain My Brain, where she dissects no less than 30 different styles of chorizo.
One Thing I Know for Sure
I'm back home following a two and a half week work-vacation in San Francisco. I've had a few good moments of solitude to reflect upon life on my way back to New York City. One of the things I determined a long time ago is that the life that I am living is one that is better than I ever imagined for myself and that I am a pretty lucky person. And that luck doesn't stem from the family I was born into, or any extraordinary personal characteristics; if you've met me you'd know I'm a pretty ordinary Jane. Rather, my luck has been fulfilled by the incredible friends I've made along the way, people who have enriched to my life so deeply.
Fresh from San Francisco - Ferry Building Farmers' Market
It seems impossible, but each year the San Francisco Ferry Building Farmers' Market gets better and better. Newer heirloom varieties, more organic choices and as always married with the same passion and commitment to quality that spawned this amazing location.
Hog Island Oyster Bar San Francisco Ferry Building
"It hit 103 degrees in Central Park in today!" my husband exclaimed. My skin started to curl as I let out a deep groan, just thinking about the sweltering heat was giving me hot flashes. I am so grateful to be shrouded in San Francisco's gray fog, where it has been a cool and breezy 65 F. It's the type of weather when you can stay comfortably snuggled in bed and sip on hot chocolate all day long.
NETTIE'S CRAB SHACK SAN FRANCISCO
Imagine sweet tender fleshy crab meat freshly plucked from the ocean, and then steamed, stuffed, and swaddled between a buttery toasted brioche bun. Sounds yum-o-licious doesn't it?
SAN FRANCISCO FERRY BUILDING SWEETS
Whenever I walk through the San Francisco Ferry Building, I can always gauge the types of food people have affinity towards. Typically the sweet tooth variety will immediately will be attracted to Miette, a patisserie shop which always has three or four large jars stacked high with macarons to entice innocent passerbyers.
SAN FRANCISCO FERRY BUILDING, Pt. 1
I
magine a location that unites America's gourmet creme de la creme. The finest cheeses, wines, chocolates, coffee, pastries, breads, olive oil, cured meats and fresh produce and meats. I know it's a bold assertion to name any one place, so I'll make the leap to at least proclaim one place that comes pretty darn close: the San Francisco Ferry Building. If I had to choose one place to grocery shop and eat from for the rest of my life, I would choose the San Francisco Ferry Building. It contains one of the strongest collections of suppliers of artisan/organic products I've encountered yet.

MISSED CONNECTIONS IN SAN FRANCISCO
If you've met me in person, you'd know that I'm a very sociable person, sometimes to my own detriment. My husband worries that one day I'll befriend the wrong person and I'll get into a whole heap of trouble for talking with strangers. But I shrug it off, I've met so many kind-hearted people along the way, many who have enriched my life experiences, and some who have become as important as close family members.
FRESH LOCAL & BEST in SAN FRANCISCO Day 1
I landed on the other side of the coast very late Friday night and it feels like I've been running nonstop to meet up with friends and family before their busy work week. The last time I visited was in late August, so not long ago. Can you tell I'm a bit homesick? This is a picture of the Alcatraz from my friend Gloria's house Saturday morning, December 5th. Notice how crisp and clear it is on the bay.
MYSTERIOUS SLIPPERY SPINACH
This is a mysterious green leaf vegetable, I've attempted a couple of searches for a common name but there does not appear to be a consensus. Australia's Department of Primary Industries lists at least 27 names for this tender leaf vine, designating the name Ceylon Spinach for locals. This leafy green is commonly found in Asian markets, and occasionally on menus of Asian restaurants. Under what name? I have no idea. If you have one or a couple, let me know. I'm sure the Australian government would love to know as well.
A FIG TREE GROWS IN MANHATTAN
Divinely honeyed, jammy and sticky sweet, fresh ripe figs are a tantalizing fruit that is stunning, both visually and in taste. Due to the fruit's highly perishable nature, figs are a scarce commodity outside of California where it is predominantly grown, making it an object of both tremendous intrigue and mystery.
HEIRLOOM TOMATO VARIETIES
Early Girl
It's the peak of the season! Did you know there more than 600 heirloom varieties in existence? Each one is uniquely interesting and beautiful. I have been studying and tasting many different types of heirloom varieties, and some tomatoes I liked so much that I saved the seeds for my pop's garden next year. And just for fun, I thought I would take this opportunity to distinguish a couple of the more common ones featured at the San Francisco Ferry Plaza market.
